Doctor
Born in Vitoria in 1948. Degree in Medicine and Surgery (Salamanca); Doctoral Thesis (1973). Summa cum Laude.
He taught and conducted research at the Universities of Oviedo, Murcia and the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He is currently Head of the Philosophy Department at the UPV/EHU and his lines of research focus on the Physiology of Applied Force and Sports Medicine and the Metabolism of the Adipose Tissue.
He has supervised 20 Doctoral Theses, of which 5 have received summa cum laude. He is the author of over 80 Research Papers and Works among which those published in the British Journal of Pharmacology stand out. Enzime; Med. Sci. Sports Exerc; J Appl. Physiol. etc., he has also participated in numerous books.
Among the latest research papers, those that stand out are related with the Physiology of Cycling, publications in the most important sports magazines (SPORT SCIENCES).
From 1984 to 1987, he was the Basque Government's Deputy Counsellor of Health and Consumption, and from 1991 to 1996 he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Basque Country.
From 1996, he was President of the Basque Studies Society, Eusko Ikaskuntza, until 2001 and from 1997, the Headmaster of the Basurto Medical Institute Specialized in Sports Medicine. The Gold Medal from the University of the Basque Country is one of the many awards he has received.
He is a member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Academy of Medicine.
