Chemist

Born in Bilbao in 1949, she graduated in Chemistry at the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country in the first intake of students of the Faculty of Sciences in Lejona. She is Professor of Research at the Polymer Science and Technology Institute (ICTP) of the National Research Council (CSIC), Madrid (Spain), where she heads the Research Group on "Nanostructuring, Gelling and Modification of Polymers" of the Department of Macromolecular Chemistry.

She is the author of over 175 publications, mostly in journals with a high impact rate, and has supervised 20 PhD theses, European Master's and other Diplomas. She has led 35 research projects including 9 European projects and 10 research contracts with multinational companies. She holds 4 patents.

She has been invited to deliver lectures, has organised international Conferences and has sat on International Advisory Committees on over 70 occasions. She has also presented 50 oral papers at international conferences and has been invited to give 30 courses at Universities in Europe and Latin America. She has spent periods of time at international and national centres: 2 years at the CNRS in Lyon and Strasbourg. 1 year at the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country and 1 year and three months at the Polytechnic University of Barcelona.

She sits on various international committees, NSF (USA), ESF (EU), ILL (Grenoble, France) and others. She also sits on the CSIC's Ethics Committee since it was set up in 2008.

She also been the Coordinator of the Materials Science and Technology Area of the CSIC (Oct 2004-June 2008); the Manager of the National Programme for Materials (of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Oct 2000-Oct 2003). At the same time, between 1996 and 2001, C. Mijangos was Director of the Polymer Science and Technology Institute, CSIC, Chief Editor of the "Revista de Plásticos Modernos" and Director of the Master's Programme in Polymer Science and Technology.

Awards and Recognition: Member of the Ethics Commission CSIC, 2008; Badge of Honour 2004 of the Spanish Scientific Society in recognition of her research work in the field of polymers and scientific and technical assistance in companies in the sector. First Prize awarded by "Ciencia en Acción, Año 2008" for "New Materials in 21st Century Society".

Carmen Mijangos leads a very busy professional life in the Basque Country, where all her family are.
